IMPROVING WELFARE OF CAPTIVE ANIMALS
We realise we cannot eradicate captivity tomorrow,
so we work to improve lives of captive animals today.
Building upon knowledge base and collaboration with such organizations and institutions as ZLS, Animals Asia, WAZA, EAZA we provide animal management staff at zoos, animal parks and other captive facilities with educational and informational support so they can meet the health and welfare needs of animals in their care:
- by consulting on right habitat and enclosure design, taking into consideration available resources and circumstances
- by attracting world renown experts to consult the facilities on various important issues
- by demonstrating how enrichment programmes can be used to stimulate captive animals, encourage natural behaviour patterns and prevent stereotypic behaviour
- by provide the management with practical instructions and brochures on affordable enrichment design
- by facilitating negotiations with private owners to surrender them to captive facilities with better conditions for animals
- by raising public awareness of such issues as petting zoos and travelling dolphinaria and campaigning for their ban
- by building the first Wild Animal Sanctuary in the region
